The Moon, our cosmic satellite, exerts an undeniable influence on our physical body and our psyche. As it waxes and wanes from full to new, this reliable pulse marks the progression of time through the seasons. Diverse cultures have attributed names to the full Moon, signifying this annual rhythm. Perhaps we are particularly familiar with those of Native American peoples, whose names often relate to seasonal cycles such as planting, harvesting, and the movement of animals, serving as connections to the natural world.
Drawing inspiration from these names, I have created a series of works that reflect a personal connection to my specific environment. For each full Moon throughout the past year, I placed intention on my observations of the natural patterns around me. These observations were then related to this series of paintings. This attempt to tap into the cyclical rhythms of the natural world is a means of pacing a busy life, marking time, and finding balance. A deeper connection to the environment around me emerges through looking, listening, and reflecting on the space I inhabit. The result is paintings that celebrate the elegant complexity of this cosmic body.
The sky is constant in its presence and consistent in its patterns. Throughout history, celestial bodies, including the Moon and stars, have been a source of inspiration for cultures worldwide. These skyward companions have been categorized and predicted by science and mused upon by artists. Throughout history, people have attempted to harness the boundless heavens by weaving myths, composing music, writing poetry, and creating art inspired by looking into the unfathomable depths above us.
