My paintings strike a balance between abstraction and representation. They are defined by hard-edged geometric forms and a restrained palette. The work uses line and color to manipulate perceptions of spatial awareness. Included in this exhibit is my piece Greenhouse 3. The painting is created through the application of many layers of casein paint on a clay board panel. Starting with a flat opaque surface, I then apply veils of translucent color, one over the other which float on the surface. To finish the work, I scratched through the paint to create a sharp, structural drawing. My work is focused on hard-edged depictions of architectural design, which explore themes of Modernity and Industrialization. I chose the subject matter of a greenhouse because these buildings reveal their structure in such a beautiful way. The clear glass of a greenhouse invites light in to reveal the interior structure of the building. I was thinking about how much time people were spending on video conferencing applications such as Zoom during the pandemic, and how this means of communication opened up our private spaces to give us all a glimpse into each other's personal lives. Much like a greenhouse dissolves the barriers of interior and exterior, our modern technologies are breaking down barriers between our private life and our public life.
